Happy Halloween!! But beware of "The BLOB" - Paris Zoological Park unveils slime mold exhibit...
Straight out of a horror movie, a real-life, intelligent, self-healing “Blob” is being exhibited at (and is sure to escape from!) the Paris Zoological Park. We couldn’t be more terrified!!
In all honesty, this exhibit actually looks very cool! The Blob in question is Physarum polycephalum. Not, scientifically speaking a fungi, P. polycephalum is an eukaryotic organism more closely related to Amoebae. Scientists have determined that this organism can create long-term memories, make decisions, and even solve math problems, all without having a brain or central nervous system. Wow!
Not only can the P. polycephalum heal itself if damaged, two separate “blobs” can fuse into one if they meet. The P. polycephalum also has 720 sexes, or ways it can reproduce. Amazing.
Have a Happy Halloween everyone! Be safe out there! Below is a video from the Parc Zoologique de Paris about the exhibit.
